Sir, Dear Editor, the report on “Performance of urinalysis tests in screening for significant bacteriuria is very interesting.”[1] Vignesh et al. concluded that “the results of rapid dipstick urinalysis tests might not be sufficient enough to replace the conventional urine culture method, and the clinical decision is to be made only based on the culture and sensitivity results among the HIV‐infected patients.”[1] Indeed, this result can be expected since the basic investigation technique for any dipstick test is dry biochemistry which cannot replace the gold standard technique of microscopic and microbiological tests. In a recent report, it is noted that the use of nonstandard technique for urinalysis test aiming at the diagnosis of infection is very common and becomes a big problem in clinical general practice.[2] Nevertheless, the use of dipstick test might still be useful in large‐scale primary screening. The confirmation for positive case by standard referencing technique is the next step.

Evaluation of rapid urine screening tests to detect asymptomatic bacteriuria in pregnancy.
In order to compare the performance of leukocyte esterase and nitrite urine dipstick tests with enhanced urinalysis (uncentrifuged urine white blood cell count/mm(3) plus Gram stain) in detecting asymptomatic bacteriuria in obstetric patients, clean-catch midstream urine specimens were collected from 250 consecutive asymptomatic pregnant women. Ten of the women (4.0%) showed urine culture resul...

A positive dipstick urinalysis (i.e., leukocyte esterase test and/or nitrite test) did not reliably detect significant bacteriuria in 479 ambulatory women with suspected uncomplicated urinary tract infection; 18.9% of the urine samples that demonstrated significant bacteriuria would have been rejected by the laboratory based on a negative urinalysis screen.

| 2017 | 1 Of the study population, 57.6% were females with mean age of 30.3 years (range, 4–66) and the rest were males with mean age of 38.6 years (range, 1–79). Most infections were due to Escherichia coli (10.7%), followed by other members of family Enterobacteriaceae, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Table 1 outlines the performance of the urinalysis tests for detection of...

A new flow cytometry-based automated urine analyzer, the UF-50, was evaluated for its ability to screen urine samples for significant bacteriuria. One hundred eighty-six urine specimens from patients attending an outpatient clinic of a university-based hospital were examined. The results obtained with the UF-50 were compared with those obtained by conventional quantitative urine culture. The UF...
